In the Community - Environment - BNSF

BNSF and the Environment

At BNSF, we believe it is good business and good citizenship to minimize our impact on the planet and to contribute to the long-term sustainability of every community we serve. Railroads are by far the most environmentally preferred mode of surface transportation, and BNSF is a leader in the rail industry for the protection of our air, land and water.

BNSF plays a vital role in our nation's economy. Rail carries more than 40 percent of our nation's freight, and what we transport touches nearly every individual in all walks of life: grain, soybeans, lumber, steel, plastic, ethanol, coal and more. We do this while reducing emissions, saving fuel and relieving highway congestion.

Rail also provides a tremendous opportunity beyond fuel efficiency and sustainability: it reduces supply chain costs, allowing American businesses to be more competitive in the global market. A BNSF train can move one ton of freight 500 miles on just one gallon of diesel fuel.

Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report

BNSF Railway's Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report highlights the company’s focus on continuing to enhance safety as well as efforts to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions through more sustainable operations. The BNSF Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report was prepared using guidance from the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. GRI is a globally-recognized reporting framework for environmental, social and governance performance. The report addresses material issues important to BNSF stakeholders and its business.

Emissions Reduction

Rail freight transportation can provide tremendous value in reducing the country's overall transportation emissions and carbon footprint.

Hazardous Materials

Railroads carry some hazardous freight and it is of the utmost importance for our customers, the communities through which we operate and our employees that we handle these shipments safely.
